LETTERS, Page 6Thailand's Drug War
The Thai armed forces are disturbed by your article on the
international drug trade (NATION, Aug. 28). Instead of an
objective report, you tarnish the efforts made by Thailand's
government to suppress drug trafficking. You take a swipe at the
Royal Thai Army in claiming that army helicopters are sometimes
used to transport heroin. If the army were given conclusive
evidence of examples of this use, such as the type and the serial
number of the helicopters, then it would investigate straightaway.
The Thai armed forces will not tolerate such misconduct by its men.
If TIME does not have such evidence, then it should not have
published these charges. You should give credit to the armed
forces' moves to combat the drug problem by giving aid to domestic
and international antidrug agencies. These efforts have resulted
in the seizure of sizable quantities of drugs on many occasions --
news that rarely makes the headlines in your magazine.
